Margaret Ashman is an experienced printmaker specialising in photo etching. She trained at the Universities of Hertfordshire and Brighton and is also an Oxford graduate. She is currently a fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and member of the Printmakers Council.
Margaret Ashman is a printmaker whose etchings focus on sign language and dance. Her interests include exploring gesture and sign as the root of language; transformation and transcendence. Hands feature as a recurring theme in her images, whether re affirming positive qualities of human nature or as a means of expression.
Ashman's recent work includes a sequence of prints based on a sign dance which she made into an Artists's book Towards the Light for an exhibition at the University of Kent, Capturing Movement. She was also commissioned by the Arts Council to make a series of self portrait photo etchings, and self portrait film as part of a project, Shifting Subjects, at the Abbey Walk Gallery.
